MARKET INFORMATION

Rivertop Renewables is simplifying water treatment with Waterline® CI. This new corrosion inhibitor introduces versatility, sustainability and forgiveness in water conditions that stress phosphorous-based programs. Waterline CI is a phosphorous-free corrosion inhibitor that protects carbon steel in cooling water systems. Waterline CI helps water treatment professionals meet their goals for performance, regulatory compliance and cost containment. The innovative inhibitor offers the following benefits to both formulators and end users of cooling water treatment products:
  • Outstanding performance across a wide array of industrial and institutional cooling water conditions
  • Excellent compatibility with other commonly used water treatment components
  • Ability to develop and apply “no-P” and “low-P” treatment programs
Waterline CI enables product and environmental differentiation in a competitive market and evolving regulatory climate. When chromates were banned from cooling water treatment formulations the industry turned to phosphorous-based chemistries. Unfortunately, these chemistries lead to a multitude of complications:
  • Suboptimal performance under stressed water conditions
  • Fouling from precipitation
  • The need for stabilizers
  • Accelerated corrosion of zinc alloys
  • The addition of nutrients that promote bacterial growth
Phosphorous-based chemistries are facing increased pressure from regional and federal regulators to limit eutrophication of surface water. These regulations are making cooling water more costly to discharge to municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Waterline CI provides an attractive alternative to dependence on phosphorous-based chemistries.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Waterline® CI provides unparalleled protection across a wide array of cooling water conditions and treatment formulations. Its versatility extends from use in industrial and institutional cooling systems, low and high pH and into water with high hardness. And its sustainability has been recognized by the EPA. Derived from Rivertop’s production of sodium glucarate, Waterline CI is the first corrosion inhibitor whose active raw material has been reviewed by the EPA’s Safer Choice program and qualifies for use in Safer Choice-labeled products. Waterline CI forms a persistent, passivating film on steel surfaces. The product is an all-organic, cost-effective alternative to phosphorous-based formulations. Waterline CI delivers:
  • Superior protection of carbon steel surfaces
  • Outstanding performance in both low and high hardness water and across a wider pH spectrum than phosphate
  • Phosphorus-free technology that does not pose fouling risk with other cooling water components
  • Excellent compatibility with other commonly used corrosion inhibition chemistries
  • Sodium glucarate chemistry that has been reviewed by EPA’s Safer Choice Program and qualifies for use in Safer Choice-labeled products.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Waterline® CI effectively inhibits corrosion of carbon steel in cooling towers when applied as P-free and low-P treatment formulations. When used in P-free formulations, Waterline CI does not pose a fouling risk with calcium and eliminates the need for phosphate-stabilizing copolymers. Waterline CI also exhibits compatibility with phosphates and phosphonates, enabling the development of low-P formulations. The product excels in high-hardness cooling waters: Waterline CI does not cause calcium deposition and does not prompt concerns with overfeeding the inhibitor. Waterline CI has been shown to achieve a lower and more stable corrosion rate over time as compared to phosphonate treatments used in HVAC systems. Rivertop image - Waterline Tech Bulletin, May 2016 Waterline CI enables water treaters to eliminate the need for stabilizing copolymers typically required to keep phosphorous-based chemistries from fouling cooling water systems with calcium precipitation. This advance maintains a combined low total cost of formulation and in-use performance economics. The product is derived from renewable feedstocks applied to Rivertop Renewable’s proprietary manufacturing technology. Rivertop publishes relevant information about Waterline CI, including:
  • Product Data Sheet that characterizes the inhibitor
  • Technical Bulletins on the results of performance testing trials
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Test methods and results reported in the Waterline CI Technical Bulletin, 2.0, demonstrate:
  • Superior performance vs. phosphonates in HVAC water
  • A more persistent film than phosphate in refinery water
  • Better performance in high hardness water
  • No to low aggressiveness to galvanized metal
  • Excellent stability with oxidizing biocides
  • Biostability: does not contribute to additional microbiological growth
