Applications
The unique structure of glucaric acid – with its four chiral centers – provides for a vast range of technical applications. Glucarate-containing bioproducts and polymers are best used in short-life applications such as absorbents, adhesives, films, fibers, composite materials, fire and flame retardants, dust suppressants, heavy metal sequestering agents and fertilizer delivery agents, all of which would safely degrade in soil or water after their designed use is over. In addition, they may serve applications requiring both easy absorption and elimination by the human body such as cosmetics.

Rivertop’s technology shows great promise in the development of composites with novel characteristics. Composite materials are engineered mixtures typically selected for improved strength over the individual constituents. We envision the next generation of composites to be engineered not for indefinite life but rather for their intended life. Use of Rivertop’s degradable polymers could serve both functions: increasing material strength while aiding in degradation under typical landfill conditions.
Rivertop has pioneered a number of applications for glucarates and related building block chemicals, and will continue to advance the applications of renewable chemicals through partnerships in science and industry.
